Sign Permits

People or businesses wishing to hang signs in the City must apply for a Sign Permit. Both the Sign Permit Application and Temporary Sign Permit Application should be uploaded to the Accela Citizen Portal to complete your submission.

Sign permit applications typically require:

  • Sign dimensions and materials
  • Method of illumination (if applicable)
  • Site plan showing sign location
  • Elevation drawing of the sign
  • Structural and electrical details (if applicable)

Planning and Building & Safety staff review applications for compliance with zoning, building, and safety standards.

Gudielines

Sign guidelines are in place to provide standards for signs, to safeguard life, health, property, safety and public welfare, while encouraging creativity, variety, compatibility, and enhancement of the city's visual image.

It is unlawful for any person, entity or corporation to authorize, alter, erect, construct, maintain, move, change, place, suspend or attach any sign within this city without an approved sign permit and related building and electrical permits as required by this chapter.  Signs that legally existed prior to the effective date of this chapter may be altered, reconstructed, maintained, moved or changed only in compliance with this chapter.

The Sierra Madre Municipal Code relating to signs may be found here: SMMC 17.72

Prohibited signage generally includes:

  • Signs installed without required permits
  • Signs creating traffic or safety hazards
  • Oversized signs exceeding zone limits
  • Signs placed in the public right-of-way without approval

Temporary signs (construction, promotional, event signage, etc.) must comply with size, placement, and duration requirements outlined in the Municipal Code. Some may require permits.

All signs must:

  • Be located on private property
  • Not obstruct visibility or create traffic hazards
  • Be structurally sound and safely installed
  • Be compatible with building architecture
  • Comply with electrical and building codes (if illuminated)

Signs in the public right-of-way are not permitted without authorization.

Please note: Sign allowances vary by zoning district. Certain sign types, sizes, and illumination may be subject to Planning review and approval, even if generally permitted. Applicants are encouraged to consult with the Planning Division to confirm specific requirements for their property.
