Household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste require special handling and should not be placed in household trash, poured down drains, or dumped outdoors. Sierra Madre residents have access to free household hazardous waste and electronic-waste collection programs available throughout Los Angeles County.

S.A.F.E. Collection Centers Sierra Madre residents may use permanent City of Los Angeles S.A.F.E. Centers at no charge for household hazardous waste and electronic-waste disposal.

Before you go: Household hazardous waste transportation is limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip. Keep materials secured in sturdy, leak-proof containers and check the official event or facility page for current locations, hours, and temporary closures before traveling.

Where to Take HHW and E-Waste

One-Day Collection Events

Los Angeles County and the Sanitation Districts operate free, drive-through HHW and electronic-waste collection events throughout the county. Most events are held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., unless otherwise noted. No appointment is required.

Permanent Collection Centers

Los Angeles County residents may also use permanent S.A.F.E. Centers operated by the City of Los Angeles or the County's permanent collection centers in Palmdale and Signal Hill. Hours vary by facility.

What Can I Bring?

Common household hazardous waste and electronic waste accepted through these programs include:

Paints, stains, solvents, and adhesives
Household cleaners and chemicals
Pesticides, herbicides, and garden chemicals
Automotive fluids and related products
Batteries and electronic waste
Fluorescent bulbs and mercury-containing products
Pool chemicals
Propane cylinders and other qualifying household hazardous materials

Items Not Accepted at County Collection Events

Business or commercial hazardous waste
Explosives, ammunition, marine flares, and radioactive materials
Controlled substances
Regular trash and tires
Large appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, and washing machines
Solar panels

Accepted materials can differ by program and facility. Check the applicable collection program before transporting unusual materials.

Transport Limits and Drop-Off Preparation

Transport limit: No more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of household hazardous waste may be transported per trip.

Keep materials in their original containers whenever possible.
Do not mix different products or chemicals together.
Clearly label materials that are not in their original containers.
Make sure lids are secure and containers are not leaking.
Place materials upright in sturdy cardboard boxes to prevent spills.
Transport boxes in the trunk or cargo area, away from passengers.
At drive-through collection events, remain in your vehicle while trained staff remove the materials.

Free Reuse Centers

Los Angeles County operates Reuse Centers at the Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center and EDCO Recycling & Transfer Center. Residents may pick up usable household products that otherwise would have entered the waste stream, including cleaners, paint, and lawn or garden products.

Products are available free to Los Angeles County residents.
You do not need to drop off hazardous waste in order to pick up a reuse item.
Households may select up to five reuse items per week.

Business Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous-waste collection events and residential drop-off programs do not accept hazardous waste generated by businesses.

Qualifying small businesses may use the City of Los Angeles Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) Program for a fee. The program is available by appointment and requires an EPA identification number.
