Pet Emergency Preparedness

Pets are part of the family. Include them in your household emergency plan and prepare supplies for their individual needs.

Evacuating? Take your pets with you. Plan ahead for transportation and a safe place to stay.

Keep supplies together in an easy-to-carry bag or container:

  • Food and water: A 7–10-day supply for each pet, plus bowls.

  • Medications: A 7–10-day supply and instructions for use.

  • Leash and carrier: A sturdy leash, harness and appropriately sized carrier.

  • Records: Copies of vaccination and medical records in a waterproof container.

  • Sanitation supplies: Waste bags, litter and a litter box, as needed.

  • Comfort items: Familiar bedding, toys or treats.

  • First aid supplies: Ask your veterinarian what to include for your pet.

Check your kit regularly and replace expired supplies.

  • Identify pet-friendly places to stay, such as a friend’s home, hotel or boarding facility. Confirm their policies in advance.

  • Plan how you will safely transport each pet.

  • Arrange for a trusted neighbor, friend or relative to help if you are away.

  • Show your helper where to find your pets, carriers and emergency supplies.

  • Keep veterinarian and emergency boarding contact information with your kit.

Some evacuation shelters cannot accommodate pets. Check official emergency updates for available animal sheltering options.

  • Make sure your pet wears an ID tag with current contact information.

  • Keep your pet’s microchip registration information up to date.

  • Save a recent photo of each pet and a photo of you together to help establish ownership if separated.

  • Keep information about medical needs, feeding routines and your veterinarian with your emergency records.
