Speak Before Council

Public Comment

The City Council welcomes public participation and encourages residents, business owners and community members to share their thoughts. Public comment is an important part of local government and helps City Council understand the needs and perspectives of the community.

You may comment on:

  • Items on the meeting agenda (when the item is being considered), or

  • Non-agenda items that fall within the City Council’s jurisdiction.

The Council will listen to the public on any item on the meeting's agenda. The City Council cannot legally take action on any item not scheduled on the agenda. Such items may be referred for administrative action or scheduled on a future agenda. Comments will generally be limited to three minutes per speaker.

Public Comment for Items on the Agenda
Persons wishing to speak on any item on the agenda will be called at the time the agenda item is brought forward. Persons wishing to speak on closed session items have a choice of doing so either immediately prior to the closed session or at the time for comments on items at the open session.

Public Comment for Items Not on the Agenda
Time shall be devoted to audience participation early on the agenda. If additional time is needed, the Mayor will allow for time at the end of the agenda.

To ensure meetings remain respectful and productive, speakers are asked to:

  • Address comments to the City Council as a whole

  • Be courteous and respectful

  • Avoid personal attacks, profanity, or disruptive behavior

The City Council cannot take action on non-agenda items but may refer matters to staff or place them on a future agenda.

If you are unable to attend a meeting, you may submit a written public comment in advance by email to public comment. Written comments received by 3pm on the day of the meeting are distributed to the City Council for their review and consideration before the meeting. Public comment is part of public record.

If you have questions about public comment, meeting agendas, or accessibility accommodations, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 626-355-7135 or CityClerk@sierramadreca.gov .
