Streets and Sidewalks

The City of Sierra Madre maintains its streets and sidewalks to ensure safe, accessible, and reliable travel throughout the community. The Public Works Department is responsible for street maintenance, sidewalk repairs, and related permitting, and continues to invest in long-term infrastructure improvements citywide.

Street Maintenance & Rehabilitation

The Public Works Department maintains Sierra Madre’s streets through regular evaluation, repair, and rehabilitation projects to ensure they remain in peak condition.

Recent and ongoing street projects have targeted Sturtevant Drive, Mountain Trail Avenue, and portions of East Mira Monte Avenue. Construction scopes typically include asphalt rehabilitation, concrete sidewalk repairs, curb and gutter upgrades, ADA ramps, and surface grinding and capping.

Sidewalk Repair & Replacement Program

Citywide Assessment

To improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, Public Works evaluated all city sidewalks. The assessment identified 2,535 areas with lifts ranging from 1/4" to 2.5", and 319 locations requiring full replacement. The majority of these lifts are caused by roots from public and private parkway trees.

Precision Saw-Cutting

Instead of traditional grinding, which leaves unsightly scarring and accelerates deterioration, the City uses patented precision saw-cutting technology. This method completely removes trip hazards, leaving a smooth, ADA-compliant surface.

Progress by the Numbers

  • 24,000+ sq. ft. of sidewalk repaired or replaced over the last seven years.
  • 168 curb ramps upgraded to new ADA standards.
  • Phased Zones: The City is broken down into four zones. Hazards are repaired incrementally by zone each year, targeting the most severe areas first.
Program Goal: To reevaluate in the fourth year of the current zone program and establish a permanent, annual repair and replacement program.

Funding Sources

Street and sidewalk improvements are made possible through a combination of federal, state, and local tax dollars, including:

  • Rebuilding California
  • RMRA (SB 1)
  • Gas Tax
  • Measure M
  • Measure R
  • Proposition C
