Household Hazardous Waste

Proper disposal of hazardous materials is critical to protecting our community and the environment. Los Angeles County and the Sanitation Districts provide free drop-off locations for residents to safely dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and electronic waste.

Drive-through events are held across the county, mostly on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. No appointments are necessary.

S.A.F.E. Collection Centers

Permanent locations open every weekend for residents to drop off household chemicals, paint, and e-waste.

Hours: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Open 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month).
Closed: June 20, July 4, and September 5, 2026.

Hours: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Open 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month).
Closed: February 14, March 28, May 23, October 10, November 28, and December 2026.

Important Limits & Rules

  • Strict Transport Limit: You may only transport a maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.
  • Address Verification: Effective November 1, 2025, all participants utilizing S.A.F.E. Centers must provide a valid residential address.
  • No Business Waste: These events and centers are strictly for residential waste. Businesses must use certified commercial recyclers.

How to Prepare for Drop-Off

  • Pack items in cardboard boxes to avoid spillage. Be prepared to leave your containers and boxes at the site.
  • Keep items in their original containers. Do not mix different products together.
  • Label any materials that are not in their original containers.
  • Ensure containers are not leaking and lids are tightly sealed.
  • Place boxes in your vehicle's trunk, away from passengers. Remove all other items from the trunk.
  • At the event: Remain in your vehicle. Trained personnel will safely remove the items from your trunk.

Items Not Accepted at Collection Sites

  • Waste generated from businesses or commercial enterprises.
  • Explosives, ammunition, marine flares, and radioactive materials.
  • Controlled substances.
  • Standard trash and tires.
  • White goods (refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, etc.).
  • Solar panels.

Free Reuse Centers

Help divert usable materials from the waste stream. Residents can visit the Reuse Centers at the AVECC or EDCO facilities during normal operating hours to pick up unused or partially used household cleaners, paint, and garden care products for free.

Rules: You do not need to drop anything off to pick up an item. Limit of up to 5 items per week, per household.

Are you a business?

Hazardous and electronic waste generated from businesses is not accepted at County permanent centers or residential collection events.
