Wildlife Management & Safety
Sierra Madre’s proximity to the San Gabriel Mountains means we share our community with wildlife like bears, coyotes, bobcats, and deer. While most interactions are peaceful, residents must be proactive. The City's strategy balances respect for wildlife with an uncompromising commitment to public safety.

Bear-Resistant Bins: Community Responsibility
Athens Services has distributed bear-resistant containers to residents across Sierra Madre. This system only works if everyone participates. A single unlatched bin can attract bears to an entire neighborhood.
The gravity-fed lid only works when fully closed and latched. Check your bins every night.
ALL food scraps must go in the Green Organics Bin. This is the primary way to stop baiting bears to your home.
If you need a replacement, contact Athens Services immediately.
Species Safety Guidelines
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) "Keep Me Wild" program offers these specific tips for our residents.
Black Bears
"Longer Days, Smarter Ways"
- Secure Trash: This is the #1 attractant.
- Lock It Up: Close windows and garages.
- Encounter? Stand tall, make noise, back away slowly. Do NOT run.
Coyotes
"Stay Coyote-Wise"
- Remove Attractants: Pick up fallen fruit immediately.
- Pet Safety: Keep small pets indoors from dusk to dawn.
- Hazing: If you see one, be loud. Use noisemakers.
Mountain Lions
"Wiser Ways"
- Don't Hike Alone: Avoid dawn/dusk activity.
- Look Big: Raise arms. Do not crouch or turn your back.
- Fight Back: If attacked, fight aggressively.
Deer
"Don't Feed the Bait"
- Do Not Feed: It is illegal and attracts predators.
- Drive Carefully: Watch for deer crossing roads at dawn/dusk.
- Garden: Use deer-resistant plants.
