Power Outages & PSPS

Prepare for power outages, check your address for updates and find Southern California Edison (SCE) resources.

A potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) notice means power may be shut off. It does not confirm an outage at your address.

Prepare for an outage

  • Charge phones and portable batteries.
  • Keep flashlights, batteries, water and food ready.
  • Plan for powered medical equipment and medications.
  • Keep important phone numbers available on paper.

Check status and get alerts

Search your service address for location-specific updates.

Stay at least 100 feet from downed power lines. Call 911 from a safe location to report a downed line or an immediate threat to life.

During dangerous fire weather, SCE may temporarily disconnect power to reduce the risk of its equipment starting a fire. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). Other outages can result from equipment damage, storms or scheduled maintenance.

Under consideration: Your address may be affected if a shutoff becomes necessary. Shutoff in effect: Power has been disconnected. Follow SCE notifications and check your address for current status.

Plans can change as conditions develop, and advance notice may be limited. Once conditions improve, SCE crews inspect equipment to determine whether power can be restored safely.

Learn more about SCE Public Safety Power Shutoffs

  • Use flashlights rather than candles.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics to help prevent damage when service returns.
  • Never run gas or propane generators inside a home, garage or other enclosed space. Review SCE's generator safety guidance before use.

If anyone in your household depends on powered medical equipment, arrange backup options with your equipment supplier and plan an alternative location for a prolonged outage.

Review SCE's Medical Baseline Allowance and Critical Care Backup Battery programs for eligibility and available help. Enrollment does not replace an outage backup plan.

During activated PSPS events, SCE resource centers may offer phone and portable medical equipment charging, water and information. Check active locations and hours before traveling.
